Jason Levine is a contemporary vocalist with specialization in vocal percussion and multiphonics. He is also a computer programmer in the domain of audio synthesis and interactive design. His vision is to combine his computer skills with his live performances with the goal of increasing his range of expression and creating immersive environments.
Jason has worked not only with musicians of every style and tradition, but with acrobats, jugglers, breakdancers, contemporary dancers, and clowns. He is equally inspired by stillness as he is by intensity and is constantly seeking new performing experiences. In the last two years of his career, Jason has begun teaching vocal techniques privately and in workshops.
My process begins by studying the movement of the artist(s) I am to accompany. I draw upon my vast range of vocal techniques to find what sounds can increase the meaning of the movement and allow the audience to feel what the performer is feeling in the moment of performance. I then use computer technology to extend the range of expression available to my voice. Specifically, I map the artistic gestures in my voice to other mediums such as lighting or synthesized sound. My goal is to create an immersive environment where the emotions and gestures of the performer(s) are simultaneously expressed through multiple mediums. A quiet exhale could become an ocean wave and a teardrop could change the color of the room.
